Birth and Early Life

Ashwin was born on 17 September 1986 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. His father, Ravichandran, was a former club-level cricketer who worked in Southern Railways. His mother, Chitra, was a homemaker. Ashwin has no siblings.

Ashwin developed a passion for cricket at a young age and started playing with a tennis ball in his backyard. He joined a cricket academy when he was seven years old and soon impressed his coaches with his talent and dedication. He idolized Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble as his role models.

Ashwin studied at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and St. Bede’s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai. He was a bright student who excelled in academics as well as sports. He represented his school in various cricket tournaments and won awards and trophies.

Ashwin completed his B.Tech in Information Technology from Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering (SSN) in Chennai. He balanced his studies and cricket remarkably and never compromised on either. He graduated with flying colours and secured a job offer from a reputed IT company.

Personal Life

Ashwin married his childhood friend Narayanan Prithi on 13 November 2011. They have two daughters, Akhira and Aadhya. Ashwin is a devout Hindu and follows a vegetarian diet. He is also a chess enthusiast and a fan of Manchester United.

Ashwin is also a YouTuber who runs a channel called “R Ashwin” where he uploads videos on various topics related to cricket, such as analysis, interviews, trivia, etc. He has over one million subscribers on his channel as of September 2023.

Domestic Cricket Career

Ashwin made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in December 2006 against Hyderabad. He took six wickets in the match and helped his team win by an innings and 155 runs. He also captained the Tamil Nadu Under-22 team in the 2007-08 season and led them to the final of the CK Nayudu Trophy.

Ashwin established himself as a regular member of the Tamil Nadu team and played a vital role in their success in various domestic tournaments. He was the leading wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu in the 2008-09 Ranji Trophy with 31 wickets. He also scored his maiden first-class century against Bengal in the same season.


Ashwin’s breakthrough performance came in the 2010 Indian Premier League (IPL) where he played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He impressed everyone with his economical bowling and variations.
