Shubman Gill was born on 8 September 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab, to a Jat Sikh family. His father, Lakhwinder Singh Gill, was an agriculturist who also wanted to become a cricketer but never got the opportunity. He saw the potential in his son and decided to nurture his talent from a young age.

He bought him a cricket kit when he was three years old and started coaching him at their farm. Shubman would practice for hours with his father and sometimes with a bowling machine. He also watched videos of his idols Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman on television and tried to emulate their techniques.

When Shubman was nine years old, his family moved from Fazilka to Mohali where they rented a house near the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium.. Gill made his debut for the Punjab Under-16 team at the age of 11 and scored 330 runs in five games in the district-level tournament. He also scored 351 runs in the Inter-District Under-16 Punjab cricket tournament ML Markan Trophy and at the district level, he shared a world record opening partnership of 587 runs along with Nirmal Singh. Gill was honoured with the M.A. Chidambaram Trophy from the BCCI for the best under-16 cricketer for his successful season in 2013-2014.
